Automakers Report Strong April New-Vehicle Sales

Automakers on May 2 began releasing sales data for April, showing robust growth compared to the same month in 2022.

Kia

Following its best first quarter sales performance in company history, Kia America's sales and market share growth continued with April delivering the brand's ninth consecutive year-over-year monthly sales increase with 68,205 units sold, a 15.5% increase over the same period last year.

Sales of Kia's electrified offerings, which totaled 11,798 units, were up 74% over the same period last year and 22% over the previous monthly sales record set in March. In addition, Kia's Carnival MPV achieved record-breaking April sales posting an increase of 52% over the previous high in April 2021.

Kia's SUV sales also set new records with Sportage and Telluride posting increases of 18% and 4%, respectively, over the previous same month records set by the models in April 2022. Overall, Kia's capable utility vehicles accounted for 71% of April sales.

Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America reported total April sales of 70,812 units, a 15% increase compared with April 2022 and the second best April in Hyundai history.

Hyundai set best-ever total sales in April for Elantra HEV (+57%), Elantra N (+6%), Kona EV (155%), Santa Fe HEV (+259%), Tucson PHEV (+47%), Tucson HEV (+101%) and Santa Cruz (+14%). Hyundai fleet sales were 5,917 and represented 8% of total volume for the month.

Hyundai sold 64,895 retail units in April, a 5% year-over-year increase from April 2022. Hyundai set best-ever retail sales in April for Elantra HEV, Elantra N, Santa Fe HEV, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV and Santa Cruz. Hyundai eco-friendly vehicle sales of 11,571 represented 18% of retail and a 56% year-over-year increase.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported total April sales of 32,351 vehicles, an increase of 7.5% compared to April 2022. Year-to-date sales totaled 120,735 vehicles, an increase of 7.5% compared to the same time last year. With 26 selling days in April, compared to 27 the year prior, the company posted an increase of 11.6% on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.

CPO sales totaled 4,765 vehicles in April, a decrease of 10% compared to April 2022.

Honda

Stronger inventory of new and refreshed models helped American Honda post double-digit sales gains to reach 116,000 units in April.

Honda topped 102,000 units in April, up nearly 25% for the month with strong sales across the lineup. The brand's electrified models set a monthly sales record, with CR-V and Accord hybrid-electric models nearing 60% of the sales mix.

The all-new CR-V exceeded 30,000 units for the second straight month with hybrid sales of 18,264 units.

Honda light trucks remained strong with all-new Pilot (9,949 units) and HR-V (8,970 units) in high demand; Odyssey (7,314) nearly doubled its sales compared to April 2022; Ridgeline (4,903) posted its best April since 2006.

Honda’s continued commitment to the car segment paid off as combined sales of Civic and Accord sedans reached 35,614. The all-new Accord posted 19,297 units in April, with record sales of hybrid models at 11,228 units. A high turn rate helped Civic overcome limited supply to top 16,000 units.

Acura sales topped 13,000 units for the second straight month, up more than 20% in April.

The all-new Integra posted its best month since hitting dealer lots in June 2022, topping 3,300 units to continue leading the premium gateway segment. Strong MDX sales of more than 5,700 units pushed Acura light trucks past the 8,000-unit month mark.

Subaru

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported 51,014 vehicle sales for April, an 11.5% increase compared with April 2022 (45,748). SOA also reported year-to-date sales of 194,390, a 9.2% increase compared with the same period in 2022.

In April, Outback was the top performer by volume with 15,263 vehicle sales. Impreza sales for April increased 112.7% over the same month in 2022, while WRX posted a 78.2% increase in April. BRZ sales for April increased 70.1%, and Forester sales increased 57.4% compared to April 2022. In addition, 603 of the all-electric Solterra SUVs were delivered in April.
