Automakers Report Strong February New-Vehicle Sales

Automakers on March 1 began releasing sales data for February, indicating year-over-year growth.

Subaru

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported 45,790 vehicle sales for February, a 2.1% increase compared with February 2022, when it sold 44,866. February also marked the seventh consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases for the automaker.

"February was another strong month for Subaru as we look to move beyond the supply chain issues of the past few years," said Thomas J. Doll, president and CEO of SOA.

In February, Crosstrek was the top performer by volume. Crosstrek and WRX sales were notably strong as each model achieved its best February ever. Crosstrek sales for February 2023 increased 2.4% over the same month in 2022, while WRX posted an 8,280.7% increase in February. Outback sales for February 2023 increased 5.5%, and Legacy sales increased 7.7% compared to February 2022. In addition, 347 of the new Solterra EV were delivered in February.

Kia

Kia America's record-breaking sales trajectory continued with best-ever February sales of 60,859. The milestone performance follows the best retail sales total in company history in 2022 and marks Kia's seventh consecutive monthly sales record.

Five Kia nameplates---Carnival, Forte, Niro, Sportage and Telluride---posted best-ever February totals and sales of Kia's electrified models increased 32% over the same period last year.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported total February sales of 30,639 vehicles, an increase of 8.8% compared to February 2022 and its best ever for the month.

Year-to-date sales totaled 53,606 vehicles, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same time last year. With 24 selling days in February, compared to the same the year prior, the company posted an increase of 8.8% on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.

CPO sales totaled 5,016 vehicles in February, an increase of 41% compared to February 2022.

February was the best ever sales month for the CX-30, with 8,026 vehicles sold.

Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America reported total February sales of 57,044 units, a 9% increase compared with February 2022 and the best February in Hyundai history. This was the fourth consecutive month with a total monthly sales record, led by Elantra (+53%), Kona EV (+753%), Kona N (+42%), Santa Cruz (+9%), Tucson (+13%), and Venue (+17%).

February was an all-time best-ever retail and total sales month for the Elantra N (+72%) and Santa Fe HEV (+121%).

Hyundai fleet sales were 7% of total volume for the month.

Hyundai sold 52,932 retail units in February, a 1% year-over-year increase from February 2022, setting a retail sales record for the seventh consecutive month. February retail sales were led by Elantra HEV, Elantra N, the line-up of Kona models (ICE, EV and N), Santa Cruz, Santa Fe HEV, and Venue. Hyundai eco-friendly vehicle sales of 9,415 represented 18% of retail and a 7% year-over-year increase.
