Ford Motor Company's commercial division, Ford Pro, and clean energy company Xcel Energy unveiled an ambitious plan to significantly expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the U.S. This collaboration, known as the 30x30 initiative, aims to install 30,000 EV charging ports in Xcel Energy's service areas by 2030.

"Ford Pro is a trusted provider in fleet electrification, scaling charging infrastructure for fleets with smart vehicle, charging and software solutions," said Amanda Rome, EVP, group president, utilities and chief customer officer at Xcel Energy. "And Xcel Energy is a trusted advisor in transportation electrification, providing energy, infrastructure and innovative solutions for customers' homes, businesses and EVs. Together, we are committed to making a real impact on the future of electrification in America."

The 30x30 initiative will begin in Colorado and Wisconsin in 2024, under Xcel Energy's Electric Vehicle Supply Infrastructure (EVSI) program. With plans to expand into other states including Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas, the program's future rollout depends on regulatory approvals.

"We're focused on helping them make that transition at the right time in the right way that's best for their business," said Ted Cannis, CEO of Ford Pro. "We know that may require new ways of working to encourage and support adoption. We're honored to work with Xcel Energy---together we're creating a new model to help eliminate barriers for businesses in their electrification journey."

The collaboration between Ford Pro and Xcel Energy simplifies the process for businesses to acquire EV charging support. Xcel Energy will install charging infrastructure for qualifying business customers, with most upfront costs offset. In turn, Ford Pro will supply Ford Pro Charging equipment and post-installation service and support.

Additionally, businesses can benefit from Ford Pro Intelligence, which offers smart charging software and connected solutions, potentially reducing operational costs and increasing efficiency. This includes data integration from both vehicles and chargers to optimize EV charging strategies.

The initiative also aligns with environmental goals. By promoting commercial charging during off-peak times, Ford Pro and Xcel Energy aim to reduce electric grid emissions and save costs. This collaboration serves as a potential template for future partnerships between energy companies and automotive manufacturers, addressing the critical need for EV charging infrastructure in the business sector.
