General Motors, Pilot Travel Centers LLC and EVgo Inc. announced the opening of the first 17 locations in their ambitious national EV fast charging network. Now spanning 13 states, the network aims to revolutionize EV charging by coupling it with the familiar amenities of Pilot and Flying J travel centers.
“These new charging locations and the many more to come, will be critical for improving range confidence,” said Adam Wright, CEO of Pilot Travel Centers.
The collaboration between Pilot Travel Centers, GM and EVgo, supported by various public agencies and utilities, is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in expanding the nation’s public fast charging infrastructure. This effort is not just about installing chargers; it's about creating a thoughtful, practical and accessible charging experience, especially for long-distance EV travel.
The new charging stations boast numerous features for an enhanced user experience:
- Multiple fast charging stalls capable of delivering up to 350kW.
- Protective canopies and pull-through charging stalls for EVs with towed loads.
- Centrally located chargers in well-lit, staff-monitored areas.
- Access to 24/7 amenities including restrooms, food, beverages and free Wi-Fi.
- Compatibility with Plug and Charge for a seamless charging process.
Additionally, a digital interface integrates these charging locations into various EV-related apps, making them easily discoverable for EV travelers. Starting spring 2024, GM drivers will enjoy exclusive benefits like charger reservations and discounts, while all EV travelers can avail regular deals at Pilot and Flying J locations through the myRewards Plus app.
“This new network will provide EV drivers with a quality charging experience and greater peace of mind during road trips,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy.
By the end of 2023, at least 25 Pilot and Flying J centers are expected to feature this fast charging capability, with a target of around 200 locations by the end of 2024. Ultimately, the network plans to include up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 locations nationwide, connecting both urban and rural communities.
