Automakers on July 3 began releasing strong new-vehicle sales results for the month of June, the second three-month quarter and the first six months of the year.
Honda
American Honda overcame industrywide logistics issues to post a fourth straight sales month over 110,000 units.
Honda brand sales increased more than 40% in 2Q, to 347,025 vehicles, and 54% in June, to 98,327 vehicles, with turn rates over 70%.
Sales of Honda electrified models set an all-time annual record of 137,437 vehicles in just six months, with CR-V and Accord hybrid-electric models combining for another new monthly record of 26,522 vehicles in June.
The all-new CR-V reached 30,000 units for the fourth straight month, the all-new Pilot hit 10,000 units for the second straight month, and the HR-V continued strong sales of 9,136 for June despite industrywide transportation issues.
Acura brand June sales topped 13,000 units for the fourth straight month---the first time the brand did so since 2021.
The Acura Integra topped 2,500 units in sales for the fifth straight month and continued to lead the luxury gateway segment.
The Acura RDX logged its best month of 2023, selling 3,502 units. Combined with the MDX's sales of 5,048 units, Acura SUVs topped 8,500 in June sales.
Subaru
Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported sales of 55,168 vehicles for June 2023, a 28% increase compared with June 2022 (43,175). SOA also reported year-to-date sales of 304,092, a 15% increase compared with the same period in 2022.
In June, Outback was the top performer by volume with 16,225 vehicle sales. BRZ sales for June 2023 increased 98% over the same month in 2022, while WRX posted a 59% increase in June. Impreza sales for June 2023 increased 39%, and Forester sales increased 34% compared to June 2022. Year to date, WRX posted a 148% increase, while the BRZ carline posted an increase of 51% compared to the same period in 2022.
Toyota
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. sales in June of 195,448 vehicles, up 14.9% on a volume and daily selling rate (DSR) basis versus June 2022. June sales of electrified vehicles totaled 51,535, representing 26.4% of total monthly sales.
For the first half of 2023, TMNA reported U.S. sales of 1,038,520 vehicles, down 0.7% on a volume and DSR basis. First half electrified vehicle sales totaled 270,476, representing 26% of total year-to-date sales.
Toyota division posted June sales of 168,680 vehicles, up 14.4% on a volume and DSR basis. For the first half of 2023, Toyota division reported sales of 889,108 vehicles, down 2.8% on a volume and DSR basis.
Lexus division posted June sales of 26,768 vehicles, up 18.1% on a volume and DSR basis. For the first half of 2023, Lexus division reported sales of 149,412 vehicles, up 14% on a volume and DSR basis.
Kia
Continuing momentum from 2022's record retail sales, Kia America set an all-time first half volume record of 394,333 vehicles, up 18% over the first half of 2022. Kia's retail-only sales total for the past six months was 362,933, an increase of 17% over the first half of 2022. Kia closed the month of June with 70,495 total units, an 8% increase over the same period last year, marking the 11th straight month of year-over-year sales growth.
Eight Kia models posted year-over-year sales increases in the first half, including: Carnival (+74%); Seltos (+64%); Sportage (+37%); Soul (+26%); Forte (+20%); Telluride (+18%); Sorento (+10%) and Niro (+9%). In addition, sales of Kia's electrified models increased by 40% and sales of Kia's SUVs increased by 25% over the first six months of last year.
Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America reported total June sales of 69,351 units, a 10% increase compared with June 2022. Hyundai set best-ever total sales in June for Elantra HEV (+227%), Elantra N (+27%), IONIQ 5 (+10%), Santa Fe PHEV (+9%), Santa Fe HEV (+280%), Tucson PHEV (+84%), Tucson HEV (+37%), Santa Cruz (+4%) and Kona EV (+239%).
Hyundai sold 61,991 retail units in June, a slight 2% decrease compared to June 2022. Hyundai set best-ever retail sales in June for Elantra HEV, Elantra N, IONIQ 5, Santa Fe PHEV, Santa Fe, HEV, Tucson, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV and Santa Cruz. Hyundai Green sales represented 20% of retail volume and an increase of 53% year-over-year. SUVs represented 74% of the retail mix.
In Q2, Hyundai sold 210,164 units (+14%) and 394,613 vehicles in the first half (+15%). All-time best Q2 records were set for Elantra HEV, Elantra N, IONIQ 5, Santa Fe PHEV, Santa Fe HEV, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV, Santa Cruz and Kona EV. Fleet sales represented 9% of total volume in Q2.
